4-day Red Centre tour with Kings Canyon

This 4-day small-group trip loops through Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon in the Northern Territory and the West MacDonnell Ranges. You choose a bush swag or a twin safari tent each night, and a local driver-guide handles the roads, the walks and the meals.

4-Day Red Centre 4WD Tour with Kings Canyon

About this experience

If you want the whole Red Centre rather than a quick look at Uluru, this is the loop. Over four days you walk Uluru's base, hike at Kata Tjuta, do the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon and then drive the Mereenie Loop to Tjoritja, the West MacDonnell Ranges, for Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, the Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek. One guest summed it up as really seeing the area, not a quick look at Uluru and out.

Nights are at permanent outback eco campsites near Uluru, Kings Creek and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Pick the bush swag option for a canvas bedroll under the sky, or the eco tent, which comes with a mattress, sheets and a pillow. Most meals are included (3 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 dinners), and so are all national park entry fees, which saves buying the NT Parks Pass and the Uluru ticket yourself. Groups go up to 21 people in an air-conditioned mini-coach.

It is real camping, with dirt, flies and campfires, as one guest put it, and the guide also drives and cooks. Weather matters on outback roads: two guests in the wet months describe closed roads and a changed plan, which the guide handled well. Free cancellation runs up to 14 days before. The Uluru to Kings Canyon guide compares this loop with the shorter trips.

  • Uluru at sunset and sunrise, the Mutitjulu Waterhole and rock art on the base walk
  • Kata Tjuta's Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge
  • The Kings Canyon Rim Walk in Watarrka National Park
  • The Mereenie Loop to the West MacDonnell Ranges
  • Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, the Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek
  • All park entry fees included; free cancellation up to 14 days before

How the day runs

  1. Day 1To Uluru

From Alice Springs the group stops at Erldunda and the Mt Connor lookout; guests from Yulara or Ayers Rock join after lunch. Then the Cultural Centre, a base walk to rock art and the Mutitjulu Waterhole, and sunset. About 460 km of driving and a 2 to 3 km walk, per the listing.

  2. Day 2Kata Tjuta to Kings Canyon

Uluru at sunrise, then a hike in the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta. In the afternoon you drive to a private bush camp near Kings Canyon for a campfire dinner.

  3. Days 3 and 4Kings Canyon to Alice Springs

The listing highlights the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, the Mereenie Loop to the West MacDonnell Ranges, and Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, the Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek, with drop-off in Alice Springs. Check the day-by-day plan on the listing.

What guests say

★★★★★

This was an excellent tour. It was 4 days in the red center really seeing and experiencing the area not just a quick “here’s Uluru and out”. [...] The accommodations are basic, it is real camping complete with dirt, flys and campfires, but that only served to make it more of an adventure and not just a tick off a bucket list.

★★★★★

It was a superb trip. The scenery was magnificent, the guide (who also drove and cooked) did a fantastic job using her excellent knowledge, the food good, and the accommodation above what I expected for a camping trip.

The tour was very well organized and packed with activities. Our tour guide, Maya, provided us with a wealth of information about the fauna, flora, geology, and also the life and culture of the Aboriginal people. [...] Varied, informative, somewhat adventurous, and interspersed with beautiful hikes [...]

What an unforgettable experience! [...] We had so much rain that roads were closed, we got bogged, and plans had to change on the fly… but it turned into a truly crazy adventure in the best possible way. [...] Even with the challenging conditions, it was hands-down one of the most memorable trips I’ve done.

Tips before you book

  • Bring a sleeping bag if you pick the swag. It is not included, though you can hire one onboard and pay the operator.
  • Join from Ayers Rock? Eat before pickup, because lunch on day 1 is not included for you.
  • Unsealed roads may become impassable after rain, the NT Government warns. In the wet months, keep a spare day before your flight out of Alice Springs.
  • On days forecast at 36°C (97°F) or more, NT Government rules say the Rim Walk must be started before 9am, and nobody may start it later. Summer trips start early for that reason; the best time to visit guide covers the seasons.
  • Mark the cancellation date: a full refund needs 14 days' notice on this tour.
