Discovery Resorts - Kings Canyon · Luritja Lookout, at the resort

Sunset among the Light Towers

This is an evening at Discovery Resorts - Kings Canyon, the resort near Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park, Northern Territory, not a walk in the gorge itself. A guide meets you at Luritja Lookout with canapes and drinks as the sun goes down, then you walk among 69 towers of light that change color to music.

Kings Canyon Light Towers at Sunset

About this experience

Light Towers is an installation by the British artist Bruce Munro at Discovery Resorts - Kings Canyon, on Luritja Road in the Northern Territory. According to the resort's launch release, it has 69 towers, each 2 m tall and built from 216 glass bottles, lit by solar-powered optic fibers. The colors shift in response to a soundscape by the composer Orlando Gough. It opened on 1 April 2023, and the sunset session on this page is one of three: the resort also runs a guided sunrise session and a self-guided one by night.

The sunset ticket is the social one. Your session starts 45 minutes before sunset at Luritja Lookout, where the guide hands out wristbands and the canapes and drinks come round. The listing describes the food and drinks as having a native influence. As the light fades you follow a lit path out into a field of red earth and wander through the towers at your own pace, after an introduction from a local guide. Groups are capped at 30 people, and the whole evening takes about 1.5 hours.

Be clear on where it is. The towers stand at the resort, not in the canyon and not on the Rim Walk, so a sunset session works best if you sleep at Kings Canyon. The day tour from Ayers Rock Resort is a 12-hour return trip and heads back south. If you are staying over, the evening pairs well with an early Rim Walk the next morning and, for travelers without a car, the noon transfer to Alice Springs. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before keeps the booking flexible.

  • Bring a warm layer from April to September. Tourism NT warns of cold winter nights in the Red Centre, and the Watarrka weather station recorded a July 2026 mean minimum of 4.9°C (41°F).
  • Pack insect repellent and a hat for the warm months. The NT Government advises both for Watarrka National Park.
  • Plan the Rim Walk for the morning after: on days forecast at 36°C (97°F) or above it must be started before 9am.
  • Read our guide to getting to Kings Canyon to line up the drive, the overnight stay and the evening.
